Mandalas

"Mandala" is a Sanskrit word that means "circle" or "wheel".

Mandalas usually have one identifiable centre point, and are usually circular. A variety of shapes, forms and symbols are arranged in a repeating pattern.

Colouring in a mandala is a good way to become calm and relaxed. The focus on colouring calms down swirling thoughts and stress.

Create a peaceful and inviting environment. Turn off the TV and mute the phone. Perhaps put some quiet music on. Maybe light a candle or some incense.

Choose a mandala and print it off.

Find your colours. You can use anything - pens, pastels, paint, crayons, pencils, sharpies (my kids favourite!), or a mixture.

Mandalas look great if each repeating component is the same colour, as that highlights the pattern, but the most important thing is to relax into the moment and follow your instincts. The process of colouring is more important than the end result, though its always satisfying to come to the end of a lovely design.

This is a brilliant activity for just before bedtime, or when its raining outside and everyone is a little bonkers with cabin fever.

I have chosen the mandalas below as they are fairly simple for children to colour.

They're from www.printmandala.com and www.bestcoloringpagesforkids.com

As well as the ones below, there are literally thousands on the internet ranging from simple to incredibly intricate, so it should be easy to find one that appeals to you.
